Junya Watanabe

Women's Junya Watanabe

Junya Watanabe studied at Bunka Fashion College, a school that graduated a whole range of talented young designers. His mother owned a small tailor shop, which is what directed Junya to design. Throughout the following 20 years, he worked in Comme Des Garçons with Rei Kawakubo being the head of Tricot line and Comme Des Garçons Homme Plus. In 1994 Watanabe presented his own collection. Watanabe is all about constant experiment and searches for a new form, especially when it comes to everyday wear. He loves working with trivial items like a beige trench coat, poplin shirt or jeans. According to the New York Times' Alexander Fury, when it comes to Junya Watanabe's work, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Like many of his colleagues from CDG he's got but one purpose: 'But to me fashion is creating something, creating something new through clothes'. Watanabe collaborated with Lacoste, Karrimor and his work with The North Face is ongoing.
