Yohji Yamamoto

Yohji Yamamoto

Yohji Yamamoto is a Japanese designer that turned around the understanding of fashion and design. Yamamoto was born in Tokyo in 1943. After Keio university graduation of law faculty he entered Bunka Fashion College. The first collection was presented in Tokyo in 1977. Yohji Yamamoto brand became popular worldwide after Paris Fashion Week in 1981 where he showed revolutionary silhouettes and cuts alongside with his colleagues like Rei Kawakubo. Since that time the designer`s talent appeared not only in fashion but also in perfumery and in work with costumes for movies and celebrities (remember his famous long-lasting collaboration with Takeshi Kitano). Yamamoto is known for his collaborations with European brands, especially with Adidas resulted in Y-3 label. Yohji Yamamoto designs are known for asymmetric shapes and drapery cut, attraction to black color and rare materials, external simplicity, pure lines, feeling of privacy and understatement. He's currently based between Tokyo and Paris where he lives with his dog Rin. 'I don’t walk the main street of fashion,' says Yamamoto. 'I walk the sidewalk, the dark side of the street.' Yamamoto's passion is driving: he owns Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and an antique Austin.
